Cindy’s Grandson putting out signs in Hurst

In the short time that I have known Cindy Shepard I can’t tell you how many miles we have walked, the letters we have mailed and the good times we have shared just being a part of this campaign. During that time I have gotten to see a candidate that cares a lot about all of the residents of Hurst and wanting to see true equality . In these times when it seems money is more important in how you win races, I see someone who will stand up to all the rigid ideologues and partisan politics that seems to run rampant across the country. This is truly an opportunity to give Hurst a real chance in how we want to be represented in the mid-cities. Hurst is fortunate enough to be at a crossroads with a rapidly changing Demographics. In my precinct alone, I have increased democratic voter turnout. We have an engaged group of Hurst residents sounding the alarm for progressive change and individual leaders like Cindy want to see equity for all and not just for a few.

Who is running?

The two candidates in the running for Hurst City Council Place 7 are Cindy Shepardand Howard Shotwell.

Who are we endorsing?

As your Democratic Party Precinct Chair I endorse Cindy Shepard for Hurst City Council. City Council positions are non-partisan races but over the last few years, other city council elections in the mid-cities have become increasingly partisan and the Democratic Party in Texas is starting to notice. My personal belief is they should stay non-partisan but recent news reports about aggressive rhetoric and ideologies from our Republican HD 92 representative, Jonathan Stickland and the Northeast Tarrant Tea Party have made it clear that large PAC money that perpetuates fear-based, racially divisive politics will be here for future elections. We can stem the tide and turn away from that kind of division and elect representatives that will work with all of Hurst. Thankfully I am not aware of any of that kind of rigid ideological politics staining this Hurst City Council race but we should be prepared for the future.

Cindy’s Support of the Arts District Development in the 2017 City of Hurst Sustainable Neighborhoods Plan.

Cindy has been an activist and a Democratic party precinct chair for many years. She is a huge supporter of the Arts — especially the Artisan Center Theater in the Bellaire Shopping Center. Richard Blair, co-founder and executive producer for the theater wrote about the theater and I wanted to share it with you since this theater is a passion for Cindy and we should all rally around saving it. Cindy wants to ensure the theater as well as Arts in Hurst is fully supported and not continually kept on the back-burner.

She continues to support the City of Hurst Sustainable neighborhoods plan. In this plan, it was recommended back in 2009 that an Arts District development for the Bellaire Shopping area on Pipeline Road, as a local and regional destination was favored by Hurst residents. It’s high time, the council act on these plans — since it has been over a decade and that area of South Hurst has been struggling. Thankfully, tenants like Planet Fitness and Just Ripe Produce have opened up there. If you read the recent email news from Artisan Theater’s Richard Blair, he shows how many of the attendees to the theater come from outside of Hurst — this is great for Hurst to have revenues coming from outside of Hurst as well.

It’s a natural fit as a regional arts destination. Included in this plan is “the creation of a TIF together with NCTCOG’s Sustainable Development program to fund the redevelopment of the multi-family development into single-family neighborhoods.”

Hurst is over-saturated with multi-family apartments, while needed for affordable housing options, I believe redeveloping these older multi-family developments for single family homes in these areas will be a a way to sustain a future arts district.

This is just one of many reasons to endorse Cindy Shepard. She is not afraid to challenge the status quo and she wholeheartedly cares about Hurst and it’s residents. She is going out to the small businesses, getting to know them and she is talking to residents one on one to talk about their pressing issues. I have personally had to see her greeting people at the polls and see her get confronted and yelled at by people who “don’t want a more diverse Hurst.” She doesn’t back down. That is the kind of spirited warrior you want and that we need representing Hurst on the city council.

If you live in Hurst and want a representative that will meet with all of Hurst, Texas residents please vote for Cindy Shepard, Hurst City Council Place 7.
